KCLSU to host a porn and pizza party as part of SHAG week

The KCLSU are hosting a porn and pizza party in the Shack’s studio on 5th February at 1pm.

The event is the first in a whole range of events spanning the week and kicks off what has been coined SHAG (Sexual Health and Guidance) week.

As you can imagine, we were pretty stunned first hearing about the porn and pizza party, and reactions were rife all over social media, including this TikTok which amassed over 150,000 views:

However, King’s students will be thankful to know that a porn and pizza party is not exactly what it says on the tin. Although, a second year war studies student noted that “when students see porn and pizza party, they’re not going to take it seriously and get the completely wrong idea. Students don’t have time to look into what it actually is to find out that its quite a good thing.”

In fact, the Porn and Pizza party is not quite what you’d imagine on first glance, it is enlisting the help of Gareth from Tailor Education to host a workshop on porn literacy, seeking to help students better navigate and understand the differences between porn portrayals and real life. Luckily, the pizza aspect is exactly what it says on the tin though.

SHAG week has become a popular week of events at universities across the country, seeking to inform and educate students on practising safe sex, remove taboos around the subject of sex, sexual health and sexuality and to tackle any issues that come with it.

Following on from the Porn and Pizza party there are a number of informative and entertaining events happening throughout the rest of the week as part of SHAG week. Some of these events include: Queer Dating Workshop; a trip to the Vagina Museum’s Endometriosis exhibition; SHAG week quiz; and a Sex Education watch party.

According to gov.uk, STI diagnoses among 15-24 year olds has increased by 26.5 per cent since 2021, and has becoming an increasingly important issue amongst university students. With SHAG weeks across the country finally addressing this issue there will be hopes that student awareness of STIs and STI prevention will increase and that stigma around sexual health will be removed.

Students have praised some of the topics being spotlighted by SHAG week as one third year English student said “the queer dating workshop looks positive, and the endometriosis exhibition, as it is not widely known about and can be excruciating for women.”

Despite all of the positive praise heralded upon SHAG week, people have been quick to comment on what they believe to be “bad branding,” as a former King’s student put it.

However, some students have been impressed by the marketing. A third year English student has noted that “It’s got peoples attention, the name SHAG week has got people talking. Unfortunately, most people are jumping to conclusions without knowing the full story of what SHAG week actually is. Unless there are real incentives to going most people won’t bother as most students are going to want to spend their free time doing something more fun.”
