The best Camfess reactions to *that* tax scam email
Still waiting for the £550.44 of outstanding tax returns I’m owed
Most Cambridge students seem to have received the same bizarre sequence of scam emails since the end of December, purportedly sent by HMRC and offering a refund of £550.44. Despite the convincing personalisation of the messages, which contain individual @cam email addresses, they've all been quite pathetic. Mostly due to the fact that they're all sent from Outlook and Hotmail accounts with suspicious names. I'm talking about you, [email protected]. And – wait for it, this is a good one – 'GOV accountant OLUP', AKA '[email protected]'. Some students received emails from different 'Government Officers' with names ranging from 'Trump' to 'Mittelman'.
Faculties and colleges swiftly responded to the scam, emailing students to warn them against clicking the link. But it wasn't just the university that was quick to comment. Many Camfess submissions also picked up on the hilarity of the attempted phishing attack, with some posts receiving over 700 likes.
Here are all of the best reactions, in no particular order.
