Bartender of the Week – Stevie Bettles at Scholars

She says it’s the best place in Aberystwyth

Stevie Bettles is a second year Childhood Studies student and working at Scholars Pub. For the next seven days, this girl from Wolverhampton is our bartender of the week

Scholars is a pub in Aber known for its character and old-school pub vibe. A favourite with students looking for a Sunday carvery and locals chasing after a good pint to watch the football, Scholars is a crowd favourite.

Chilling behind the bar

After winning this week’s prestigious title, Stevie told The Tab: “I love working here, we have the best character of any pub in Aberystwyth, its unique with a great mix of locals and students – there’s something different every night.

“I also have the best boss in the world (Tom) who sure will have a go at you if you mess up, but also values you as a team member. It’s great when we drag him out on the town after a shift. We’ve gotten him to Yokos plenty of times!

“No other place in Aber gets the balance of a British pub and modern style just right. We always get people complementing our decor or asking to take away the books that we offer for people to read!”

When asked what the craziest thing she’s seen was Stevie told us: “One time some locals got really drunk (tipsy according to boss man Tom) upstairs and one decided to jump off of the balcony during the pub quiz. The whole place went silent before he stood up, arms wide and shouted ‘I’m okay!’ to a round of applause.”

The traditional pub vibe

“We’ve also had plenty of funny students come in on socials, guys climbing lampposts outside – anything that can happen at a pub happens here really!”

Stevie did mention that the best thing you can do when she’s on bar is to be patient and nice: “We work some quite busy shifts, I just appreciate people being patient and funny – it really helps!”
