It’s time to admit it, Selling Sunset is just a bit bleak now
Homophobia and divorce isn’t ‘drama’ – it’s heartbreak
I’m really sorry to admit it, but Selling Sunset is bleak as hell these days. I love the cast member girlies with all my heart, but I think it’s time we quit while we’re winning, and let the show go.
Not to be dramatic, but saying that does break my heart a little bit, because since season one, I’ve really loved Selling Sunset. It’s one of the best shows Netflix has ever had, and the amount of spin-offs it’s attempted to make to emulate it prove that. But sometimes it’s best to let things go while they’re still good, and season eight has shown us that our fav selling houses and drama show is losing that edge.
Homophobia and divorce isn’t ‘drama’ it’s genuine, real life heartbreak
This season, there have been a number of serious “dramas” brought up in the women’s lives. Nicole was accused of being homophobic, as was one of Amanza’s stylists, Emma was accused of having an affair with a married man, and of course there was the heartbreak of having to watch Chelsea deal with cheating rumours and the subsequent divorce from her husband, Jeff Lazkani. On top of this, off screen there have been further dramas with the cast members, and even more accusations of homophobia, and racism.
In the first seasons of the show, it was petty office dramas, arguments and beefs between the cast members. They’d have spats over listings, and everyday friendship arguments that would spiral out of control because the women are chaotic, and I loved them for it.
However now, it feels cheap to liken their current situations to these dramas, and to try and watch the show in the same way. The women are genuinely going through heartbreak and horrendous situations, and it feels uncomfortable and almost wrong to sit down on my sofa with popcorn and lap all this up. It’s not entertainment, it’s their real lives.
The cast genuinely hate one another
If the show wasn’t enough to prove this, their constant digs at one another outside of filming are: The Selling Sunset cast hate each other. There have been loads of dramas with them outside the show, which have now gotten so bad the reunion has been cancelled, and other cast members are threatening to leave.
Chrishell has said she will never work on the show ever again whilst Nicole is in the cast, and Chelsea threatened to quit the show after a video exposed new cast member Amanda Lynn’s racist tweets.
After the tweets resurfaced, Chelsea said: “Made it clear and putting it in writing, if racist Amanda is on the show as a cast member. I’m out.” Speaking of Nicole, Chrishell said: “I will NEVER work on a show with her on it again. I would rather be sued.”
The best Selling Sunset cast members have left the show behind
On top of all of this, I’m just going to come out and say it: The old cast members were SO much better. I love Alanna and her false claim of owning Pioneertown drama, but is she really providing like the old cast members did?
Seeing Maya come back during season eight was a momentary bit of happiness, because it brought with it the nostalgia of the first seasons, and how good it was. Maya, I miss you! Christine, I miss you! Heather, I miss you! The show hasn’t been the same since a bunch of the cast members quit. (I won’t admit that I miss Davina, but low key, bring back her and the $75million listing too).
The spin-offs will live on
In recent years, Netflix has attempted a bunch of Selling Sunset spinoffs or similar, and they aren’t bleak in this way. Selling The OC has gotten really good recently, and Buying Manhattan has been renewed and I’d watch that for years. These new versions of the same concept aren’t tainted like the Sunset edition, and Netflix, I’ll keep those.
