The sad reason Netflix has decided to cancel the US spin-off of Squid Game

After all that, Netflix has reportedly cancelled the US Squid Game spin-off it had in the works. I’m actually quite gutted.

At the end of Squid Game season three, there was a huge teaser to suggest the show was anything but over. In the final moments, we saw a new recruiter in the form of Cate Blanchett. It was hinted the evil games would be moving to the US, as the scenes were set in LA.

Rumours of a Squid Game spin-off, created by David Fincher, have been around for ages. And this appeared to be our first look at that. However, it’s now been said Netflix has completely shelved it.

According to The Playlist, all plans for the new spin-off have been set aside. It’s been reported the show lost momentum, and a number of factors caused its ultimate demise. These are said to include changes in Netflix leadership, David Fincher being busy in his involvement with other major projects, and the streaming platform’s changing vision for the Squid Game franchise.

The publication has claimed sources close to production have confirmed the cancellation. The show had been planned to be released under the title “Heckler”, and would have been a US version of the show, produced in the UK.

“After years in development and various executive changes at the streamer, the sources believe Netflix’s priorities for the franchise have shifted,” the publication has claimed. It’s been said that instead of focusing around an English-language version, Netflix is now looking into the idea of more international franchises instead.

As for why they then bothered to get Cate Blanchett involved at the end of Squid Game season three, there was never any actual real indication that she was going to be involved in a spinoff moving forward. Oh?!
