Hold on, does Cate Blanchett’s shocking cameo mean Squid Game America is actually happening?

Leaks are already appearing on TikTok

Guys, Squid Game is now officially over – and I am NOT ok – but there are also countless rumours about an extended universe, Squid Game America, and Cate Blanchett possibly taking on a bigger role in the franchise.

After three seasons and simply too many deaths to name, Squid Game came to an explosive conclusion (literally) with the release of season three. The various stories and plots were tied up in a nice little bow, but in one final gut-punch moment, the acclaimed series was left on a huge cliffhanger.

In the final few moments of the Netflix show, The Front Man is in Los Angeles when he hears the familiar sound of Ddakji being played in an alleyway. The jarring Recruiter was obviously killed in season two, but its American counterpart turned out to be noneother than Cate Blanchett. The Front Man and Cate exchanged a knowing glance, possibly hinting at a worldwide network of Squid Games, but then the show just ended.

So, what does Cate Blanchett’s Squid Game cameo actually mean, if anything, and does it hint at a possible American spin-off?

There is a pretty solid chance that Cate Blanchett’s Squid Game cameo was simply that, a cameo. It hints at the possibility of international games, something we as viewers have long suspected, which keeps the door open for any future expansions in the future. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has taught us all to overanalyse every minute detail, but sometimes things are just cool.

As for the reason why two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett was in a Netflix show, she doesn’t need one – she’s motherf*cking Cate Blanchett!

Is there going to be a Squid Game America?

Because of the American twist at the end of Squid Game season three, many people have speculated about various spin-offs in the works at Netflix. The first is Squid Game America, a long-rumoured continuation of the story that is yet to be firmly confirmed by either the director of the streaming platform.

You’ve then got David Fincher’s English Squid Game, which has been teased since as early as 2023. He’s reportedly been bouncing between projects, hiring writers such as Dennis Kelly to flesh out the project, but nothing is confirmed as of yet.

A Netflix source told Rolling Stone that nothing is planned “at this time”, which could mean literally anything. Tomorrow isn’t “at this time”, and neither is next month, or next year. We know the money-hungry suits at Netflix, and they rarely let a cash grab slip from their fingers.

There are currently dozens of TikTok videos that tease Squid Game: America as being a very real project, some of which have amassed over six million views and counting. The fake posts largely feature Cate Blanchett’s Squid Game character alongside fabricated plots and descriptions for the episodes.

The Squid Game cinematic universe rumour is also spiralling once again, but as debunked in season two, it’s actually just a timeline stolen from the MCU. As of yet, Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk has not announced any major news.
