University of Exeter offers deferred places following shortage of student accommodation

The University of Exeter has given some offer-holders the option to defer their course places, following a shortage of student accommodation. 

In a statement to The Exeter Tab, a spokesperson for the university said it has seen “exceptionally strong demand” from students wanting to study at Exeter, as well as “very high demand” for accommodation. 

While students covered by the university’s accommodation guarantee are still being housed as normal, the spokesperson said the university was “unable to offer university accommodation to some students.”

The Exeter Tab understands these students were given the option to “defer” their offer to the following year, but that the deferment was not compulsory.

Posting on TikTok, one student described herself as a “victim of the accommodation crisis at Exeter.” Commenting on her video, one person said: “Got private accommodation because I gave up waiting.”

Speaking to The Exeter Tab, one student who didn’t get allocated any of her chosen halls, said they tried to negotiate with accommodation staff but was told “nothing could be done.”

Mimi, another offer-holder, claimed she was only able to secure a room due to the fact she did International Baccalaureate (IB), which had an earlier results day than A Levels, falling before the accommodation deadline.

She said: “I think accommodation should be guaranteed for all first year students. It shouldn’t matter if they got Exeter as their insurance or through clearing,” adding that private options are “expensive” for students living away from home for the first time.

Back in 2021, students who wanted to study medicine at the University of Exeter were offered £10,000 and free accommodation if they were willing to defer their course to the next year, after a record number of people applied.

A University of Exeter spokesperson told The Exeter Tab: “We have seen exceptionally strong demand from students wishing to study at Exeter this year, alongside very high demand for accommodation across the city.

“We are meeting our accommodation commitments to eligible students covered by the university’s accommodation guarantee. However, demand this year means that we are unfortunately unable to offer university accommodation to some students who are not covered by the guarantee.

“We recognise how disappointing this will be, and we are contacting affected students directly so they understand the position as early as possible and have time to consider the options available to them.

“We are supporting students to explore private accommodation in Exeter through our accommodation services. Students who live in private accommodation are fully part of the Exeter community, with the same access to teaching, student support, welcome week and students’ guild activities. Students also have the option to defer their studies to next academic year.

“We are looking forward to welcoming our new students in September and will continue to provide practical support to those affected as they prepare to join us.”
