Squid Game creator reveals eerie real-life inspiration behind the VIPs in season three

They resemble a major celebrity

Squid Game is back with season three and it’s more brutal than ever. Thankfully, the entire thing is fictional and there isn’t actually an evil game that takes place in South Korea (we hope), but there is a lot of real life inspiration behind the show – including the VIPs.

In a new interview with TIME, the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed that the mask-wearing millionaires who watch the Squid Game for entertainment are actually inspired by big tech owners who are very public with their money, and resemble Elon Musk.

“In the past, those that really controlled the system and maintained power, they were hidden behind the curtain, almost like this big unseen conspiracy. However, it’s no longer the case, especially in America,” he said.

“We talk a lot about oligarchy these days, but these so-called big tech owners, they step up, telling everyone who they’re backing with their money. The people who really control the power and the system, they no longer hide behind a curtain.”

“They willingly take their masks off, almost as if to declare, ‘We’re the ones running everything. We’re the ones in control’,” the Netflix show’s creator continued.

The fact that the evil spectators are based on a group of super-rich tech billionaires is actually quite eerie, as it makes it seem like the fictional story could one day happen in real life.

After creating the final season, Hwang realised that the Squid Game VIPs resembled Elon Musk, although this wasn’t intentional.

“Elon Musk is everywhere these days, right. Everybody talks about him. Not only is he the head of a huge tech company that controls the world almost, but he’s also this showman,” he said.

“After writing [season three], of course I thought, ‘Oh, some of the VIPs do kind of resemble Elon Musk’.”

In season three, we see the VIPs take their masks off and go into the game disguised as red guards for the first time, so they can feel what it’s actually like to kill others with their own hands.

This is very different from the first season, where the VIPs stay firmly hidden behind their gold animal masks and refuse to reveal their real identity.
