The spicy ‘wrong text’ trend is all over TikTok right now, so here’s what it is and how to do it

A spicy new trend has taken over TikTok this week called the “wrong text” trend, and it’s leaving some people who have ended up on the wrong side of the app really confused – here’s what it is and how to do it.

It’s one of many new trends that have cropped up this week, including people bedazzling everything with jewels and those horrifying AI Cat in the Hat videos. The less said on them, the better. 

The “wrong text” trend basically involves making up a text message conversation between yourself and a character from a film, TV show, or book, but it’s in the style of fanfiction.

It’s taking things way back to the 2015 Tumblr fanfic days, when everyone was obsessed with writing stories about fictional characters and putting themselves into them. But instead of writing the fanfic like a novel, you do it in the form of a text conversation instead. 

The whole trend is essentially people thirsting over their crushes, from Peter Parker aka Tom Holland to Rafe from Outer Banks and even Draco Malfoy. Standard. 

Basically, you make up a text conversation where you pretend you accidentally texted that fictional character, and then you come up with a series of replies, imagining what that character would say to you in response.

The themes of the messages are always pretty spicy, and some people are even including raunchy pictures and videos of their character crush, which are really catching people off guard.

Basically, TikTok is the new Wattpad. Even fanfiction has brought itself into 2026. One person said: “This is how reading a Wattpad fan fic felt back then.” Someone else joked: “Same time tomorrow?”

To make your own, all you have to do is download the fake text message fanfic app MeMi Message. Then, insert all the text and images, save the screenshots and upload them to TikTok in a slideshow. 

So, that’s the trend. And if you accidentally ended up on this side of TikTok when you didn’t mean to, just scroll on. This doesn’t concern you.
