Chanty Beluga is the niche meme taking over my TikTok, so here’s the lore explained

If you haven’t met her yet, let me introduce you to Chanty Beluga, the viral sensation taking over my TikTok For You Page. 

Just one week ago, an account called Chanty Beluga popped up on TikTok. In her first video, Chanty Beluga films a self-tape for the role of “crypt keeper”, with the text on screen saying, “A woman named Chanty Beluga does a self-tape”. The comments are full of people praising Chanty for the self-tape,  saying they’re obsessed with her and begging for more videos.

Chanty Beluga is an alter ego created by comedian Courtney O’Donnell, who has thousands of followers across TikTok and Instagram. She started creating videos about Chanty last week, where the whole joke is Chanty doing something very normal. There are clips of Chanty recycling a Trader Joe’s bag, introducing herself at a party, and collecting her coffee order.

In the comments, people analyse Chanty’s behaviour. 

“Her sweet soul and immeasurable joy… nobody is doing it like Chanty,” one person commented.

As the popularity of Chanty continues to grow, Courtney has made dedicated social media accounts for the persona on Instagram and TikTok, which already have 11.4k and 9k followers, respectively. The videos continue to build on Chanty’s lore: she’s sociable, she’s an aspiring actress, and she’s just landed a role in Dear Evan Hansen 2. Happy for her!
