NFL graduation speech Harrison Butker

NFL responds to Harrison Butker’s grad speech, stating it does not agree with his ‘views’

‘We are committed to inclusion’

The NFL has publicly called out Kansas City Chiefs player Harrison Butker after making a graduation speech where he labelled Pride month as “sinful” and told all female graduates they would be happiest as wives and mothers.

The NFL commented on the “sexist” graduation speech that Harrison Butker gave, which also covered themes of abortion, toxic masculinity, LGBTQ+ rights and more. Jonathan Beane, the sensor vice president of the NFL and chief diversity and inclusion officer told PEOPLE: “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

During the graduation speech, the Chief’s player discussed the “diabolical lies told to women,” as well as his opinion on abortion, IVF and surrogacy. He also called LGBTQ+ Pride Month “sinful” as he suggested the students at the college should have a “true God-centered pride, not the deadly sins sort of Pride that has an entire month dedicated to it.”

He then went on to address the male graduates in the room, suggesting they “be unapologetic in your masculinity,” and to ensure to “fight against the cultural emasculation of men.”

He started speaking directly to the females who were graduating, saying: “For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

Since the comments have been made people have been calling for Harrison to be removed from the team and a Change.org petition has also been set up to support this action, which currently has over 11,000 signatures.
