One Day: Final episode Easter eggs which make Emma and Dexter’s ending even more tragic

Prepare to sob (again)

If you’ve just about picked yourself up off the floor and stopped crying over the ending of Netflix’s new romantic drama series One Day, then you might have started to wonder about the symbolism in the show’s final episode. Filled with Easter eggs, it turns out the production team are heavily hinting to us that Emma is still with Dexter in spirit, even if she’s (sob) no longer there in person.

When Dexter returns to Edinburgh, it’s clear he sees Emma and their memories together everywhere he turns. So, prepare to get emotional over One Day’s ending all over again, because these are the hidden Easter eggs from the show’s final episode, which are so sweet you need to read about them right now:

When Emma and Dexter first climb Arthur’s Seat the morning after the night they met, yellow flowers (actually a plant called Gorse) are growing all over the hill.

When Dexter returns and climbs the hill with his daughter Jas after Emma’s death, the yellow flowers are still there – faintly in the background. And everybody on TikTok thinks this symbolises Emma is still with Dexter even after she’s passed. Sob.

On his final trip to Edinburgh, Dexter’s now much older daughter Jas is wearing a red hair band in her hair, which seriously observant viewers have noticed Emma was also wearing on the first night they met.

Again, this seems to symbolise Emma is still with him and how the joy and focus in his life now comes from Jas: “They leave it very hopeful. It’s a very wholesome way to leave them,” Ambika Mod who plays Emma told Netflix Tudum of Dexter and Jas’ ending.
