Geocaching explained: What even is geocaching and can I play it in the UK?

You lot have too much time on your hands😭

Geocaching is a global game which has risen in popularity all because of TikTok. You’ve probably seen people recently on TikTok giving tours to a geocache they’ve spotted and found in really obscure places. Yes, people have way too much time on their hands to be going around and finding little bits of paper but for some reason they can’t get enough of it right now.

Here’s everything we know about geocaching and how to play it in the UK.

What is geocaching?

Geocaching is a global game which has risen in popularity because of people playing it on TikTok. Geocaching is an outdoor activity which involves using a GPS system to find and hide containers, also known as caches.

People who wish to play the game have to register online in order to search for caches using real-world coordinates. Once they have located the cache and logged it online, they can put back the cache for others to find. But it’s not as straightforward as following the location in an app, you’re also given a riddle to solve as a last hurdle.

The hidden caches range in size, with some in tupperware and others being much smaller. Objects inside the caches include small ornaments or keychains, it’s unlikely you will find something worth a lot of money.
