Very few celebs are publicly backing Ed Sheeran, but the ones who are speak VOLUMES

The fallout from Macklemore being removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour is still ongoing, and though the former has A-listers backing his pro-Palestine comments, Ed Sheeran’s camp is looking a little bare. 

Macklemore has long been an outspoken advocate for Palestine, which Ed Sheeran would have been fully aware of when he booked his “brother” for his tour. Despite that, following a “free Palestine” speech, a billionaire in the US rallied stadium officials to have Macklemore removed. Ed Sheeran buckled to demands, and then made the situation significantly worse with his statement. 

“My audience includes young people, often children, of all backgrounds. Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum. I respect Macklemore’s strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes. However, there is room for multiple approaches to the same end: peace,” he said. 

A-list celebs, from Oscar winners to Ed Sheeran’s own support acts, have backed Macklemore and Palestine, but the other side of the argument is looking a little sparse.

Boy George

Karma Chameleon might be iconic, but Boy George hasn’t really done much since his career took off in the 1980s. His most recent claims to fame include a role as a side character in The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and an appearance on I’m A Celeb. More recently, Boy George has been on very pro-Israel, releasing an Israel-themed song, We Will Dance Again. 

Over on Twitter, where Boy George seems to spend most of his time, he’s shared a number of AI-generated memes slamming Macklemore. One said he’s “not the hero”; that honour goes to Rachel Goldberg-Polin, a family member of one of the October 7 hostages.

Since finally returning to the ground and putting away the cables, Pink has been very pro-Israel online. She was actually one of the first names in the Macklemore controversy, slamming him and his pro-Palestine speech by sharing another person’s post calling for his removal. 

After the backlash to the post, which argued that Macklemore was spreading “anti-Israel propaganda”, she took to Instagram with a lengthy post response

A portion read: “Of course I don’t speak for Israel, or for any government. I never have. What I said in October 2023 is still exactly what I believe: Hamas is a terrorist organization. Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations. Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere, and nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child.”

James May

Though he didn’t go as hard as some of the other people on this list, Top Gear’s James May did respond to a post on Twitter. It was a picture of Macklemore’s highly controversial “Jewish caricature” costume from 2014, which he apologised for. 

Someone questioned “who’s this”, and James responded: “Macklenomore.”

Joseph Bonamassa is an American blues rock guitarist, singer and songwriter that most of us have proboably never heard of. He didn’t wade into the politics of the situation, but basically told Macklemore to stay in his lane.

Lucy Connolly

I support Ed Sheeran!

To say that Lucy Connolly is a celebrity is a HUGE stretch, but she is well-regarded in the worst circles in the UK. If her name doesn’t jog your memory, she was the woman jailed for telling people to set fire to migrant hotels after the Southport stabbings. 

“I support Ed Sheeran!” she wrote on Twitter. “There is a time and a place for politics, music concerts are not one of them!”

Tommy Robinson

Shocker, the voice of the painfully uneducated, Tommy Robinson, said: “I support@edsheeran, f**k Palestine. Barrassin all im seeing on socials from middle class brats who live in suburbia.”

See, Ed, you’ve got the best possible people in your corner!

Another particularly unshocking defence came from Michael Rapaport, a washed-up actor who, admittedly, had some solid hits back in the day. He’s now employed as a full-time keyboard warrior, and he’s made several posts about the scandal. 

In one, he sarcastically wrote: “This is totally out of hand poor Macklemore, ALL HE DID WAS SAY FREE PALESTINE!!! That’s all he did, that’s the only thing and people are freaking out!!!! #sarcasm because some people don’t get my high level sense of #humor. FREE MACKLEMORE for just saying FREE PALESTINE, which is all did and he definitely has no issues with Jewish people & he even explained what was & wasn’t offensive to all Jewish people.”

As you can see, Ed Sheeran has some serious names in his corner. Who needs Florence Pugh and Hozier when you’ve got Tommy Robinson and the MASSIVE talent that is Lucy Connolly?!
