There’s a key reason Bonnie Blue was reported to the NSPCC, and not police or social services

Last week, a Tory MP reported Bonnie Blue to the NSPCC following a string of videos posted alongside her newborn baby. And while Bonnie argued her child would never actually feature in 18+ content, the suggestive videos were enough to make people rage. 

In the videos Bonnie posted she was seen cradling her newborn on a bed, surrounded by men in blue ski-masks, who appear in her adult content. Tory party equalities spokeswoman Joy Morrissey then wrote to the NSPCC “to raise serious safeguarding concerns”, calling the content “deeply disturbing”. 

At the time, others were reacting to the videos. One person called for “the UK child welfare system [to] take this baby away” while another commented that all involved in the clip should be “locked up”.

A Reddit thread has since been posted, addressing why ministers chose to report Bonnie Blue to the NSPCC, and why she wasn’t reported to the police or social services. 

“Why have the Tories reported Bonnie Blue to the NSPCC rather than the police or social services? Why is a charity the place to report this situation?”, the poster asked. “Genuine question, I’m not sure what the NSPCC can do here.”

In the replies, someone who said they had no prior knowledge of Bonnie Blue said the NSPCC has actual statutory powers, which would make it a more effective way to make a report of this sort. 

They added: “In these nations (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), only local authorities and the NSPCC can apply to a court for a care, supervision, or child assessment order. The NSPCC charity were given special powers in our law with the Children Act 1989 (England and Wales) and Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1995.”

Another person added: “It’s also who you would report concerns to if you aren’t sure which council area the child lives in.”

Later in the thread it was noted that unless there was an imminent risk to the child, the police would be unlikely to be able to do anything. The NSPCC can also assess a given situation, and then escalate it to relevant local authorities where necessary.
