Viral Google Maps replacement shows what films were shot near you; it’s ‘dangerous to your time’

The reign of Google Maps is over, and while it’s incredibly useful, there’s a new, shiny replacement called Movie Scene Map that’s so much better. You might get lost on your next road trip, but at least you’ll have fun. 

As some tech companies are barreling towards a Terminator-like future, there are other developers making actually useful platforms. Earlier this year, we had the science-backed quiz that revealed your ideal type of partner. 

What is the Movie Scene Map, and how does it work?

As the name points out pretty plainly, Movie Scene Map is a map that, you guessed it, shows you where movies were filmed – but it also works with TV shows. 

There are two ways of using it, the first being typing in the film or TV show you want to find out about. By scanning Wikipedia articles through AI, little dots will appear on the map to show you filming locations. For instance, typing in Game of Thrones showed locations in the UK, Gozo Island, Morocco, and a number of other places. Similarly, all of Harry Potter’s filming locations were in England or Scotland. 

The second way of using the platform is to zero in on a specific location. Take the Forest of Dean, for instance. By clicking the circular icon, you can see that the following shows/films were shot there: Sex Education, Jack the Giant Slayer, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, and The End of the F***ing World. It even works for video games. 

Sadly, no films were shot on my street. 

This is the guy who created it

The Movie Scene Map platform is gripping, and it was created by developer Mr Flightmussy – not his real name, obviously. He’s also the mind behind Castle Map and World Train Map. 

He wrote on Twitter after going mega viral: “I have had the honor to host over 500 000 visitors to Movie Scene Map http://moviescenemap.com. Thank you everyone! Now that I am less overwhelmed, I am working on creating some sort of verification system to make it easier to add non-Wiki registered scenes. That would solve a lot of problems. Basically I am becoming a DIV machine learning engineer.”

And he’s not stopping there. Mr Flightmussy has recieved so many suggestions for changes and additions that’s it’s going to take a while to implement them.

Movie Scene Map has gone down a hit on Twitter, where one post alone racked up 4.5 million views. Most people are enthralled by the idea, but some have said it’s a “danger” to productivity. 

One person said: “This kind of website is dangerous to your time. You go in looking for one movie…
and after 10 minutes, you find yourself scrolling: What was filmed in my city? What was filmed in my neighbourhood? What was filmed in the last place I travelled to?”

“My God, I won’t have a life anymore,” someone else said. 

Another wrote: “I already had no life but now lmao.”
