Hit the ground running: All the social media accounts Durham students need to follow

Congratulations: You’ve made it to Durham. Whether this was your lifelong first choice or you’ve already perfected the art of telling everyone that Oxbridge probably wasn’t for you anyway, you’re guaranteed to have an interesting few years ahead.

By now, you’ve probably received roughly 47 different nuggets of information about Freshers’ Week, most of which has disappeared into the black hole of your notes app. But one aspect of Freshers’ Week that’s often overlooked is the number of Instagram accounts and Facebook groups shoved in your face. So, as you move in and start preparing for your degree, here’s a short and sweet guide to the Durham social media accounts worth keeping tabs on.

College accounts

First and foremost, follow your college. It may sound obvious, but your college social media accounts are going to become some of the most useful things on your phone during Freshers’ Week. From matriculation information and event times to last-minute changes directing groups of less-than-sober freshers to the club, you’ll want to know what’s going on.

Keep an eye out for the different accounts attached to your college too. Your JCR president, wellbeing team, college societies, and more all have separate pages, and they’re likely to be posting all throughout the week and the term beyond. Basically, if an account has your college’s name in it, follow it now and work out what it’s actually for later.

Durham’s confessional accounts

Durmemes, Durfess, and Tindur are your destinations for anonymous Durham gossip, dating disasters, declarations of love, and the occasional confession which makes you wonder what sorts of people you’re sharing a lecture theatre with. Durmemes is on Instagram, while Durfess and Tindur are Facebook staples. All provide plenty of material for scrolling when you should be doing literally anything else.

The anonymity also makes them perfect conversation starters after a few drinks in The Bishop’s Mill (our local Spoons). Especially true when a Durfess post sounds suspiciously like that one boy you’ve never spoken to in your 10am seminar.

Overheard at Durham

Another Facebook page worth knowing about, Overheard is where students go with questions and problems. Lost something sentimental in Babylon? Need to know when an essay is due? Confused about some bizarre university procedure? Someone has probably asked before and found the information they needed.

It’s also where you’ll encounter the legendary Sara Uckelman, who has seemingly been asked to solve every conceivable student problem despite not being employed by most of the departments involved. You’ll soon become familiar with the Uckelman flowchart: The elaborate map of alternative university contacts which appears when someone tags her in yet another anonymous Overheard post asking for help.

You don’t have to be a Mary’s student to appreciate Mouthful of Mary’s. The account posts the college catering menus, usually early enough in the morning for you to spend the rest of the day deciding whether today’s lunch is worth walking to the dining hall for. Most catered colleges (except for John’s and Chad’s) follow this menu, making it useful even if you don’t live in Mary’s.

It’s particularly valuable when the menu’s serving hake for what feels like the fourth time that week. At that point, you may decide spending £15 on Domino’s is actually a financially responsible decision.

The Student Union accounts are worth following early. Its social media is a useful place to keep track of events, campaigns, student opportunities and various bits of information which don’t necessarily come through your college. One of the really useful things you’ll see will be information about the Freshers’ Fair, where you’ll be confronted with an overwhelming number of societies, clubs, sports teams, and other activities to sign up for.
