There’s a new AI builder prank going viral on TikTok, so here’s how to do it yourself

I can’t stop laughing

TikTok can’t seem to get enough of AI-based jokes at the moment, and the builder prank is the newest one making people cry with laughter. From the creepy scary-movie polaroid edits to the viral homeless man joke, AI prank trends just keep getting more elaborate, and this latest one is great.

Here’s how it works: you text your partner or housemate to say a builder knocked on the door, split his trousers, and asked if he could borrow a pair of theirs. Then, using AI, you add a ridiculously realistic builder into photos of your house. That’s when the fun begins.

“Babe one of the builders next door has split his trousers and he’s asking to use some of yours. Can I let him?” says one viral video where a woman pranks her fiancé.

She did the prank so well that he tried to call her several times, saying: “Get that f***ing man out of my bedroom!!!”

Want to pull the prank yourself? Here’s a guide on all the steps you need to know.

  1. Download Google Gemini. You’ll need Google’s Gemini app, their own version of an AI chatbot (similar to ChatGPT).
  2. Take photos around your house. Get shots of places where the “builder” will appear. Good ones include the front door (from inside), living room sofa, wardrobe, or bedroom.
  3. Generate your first image. Upload one of the photos to Gemini and write a really detailed prompt. Example:
“Add a very realistic builder into this doorway. He has short dark hair, a beard, and is wearing a hi-vis jacket, helmet, and boots, but his trousers are ripped and you can see his pants.”
  4. Keep it consistent. Save the image, then upload a new photo (say, your wardrobe) and ask Gemini to place the same builder there. Be specific about the action: “He’s bending down looking through the wardrobe for a pair of trousers.”
  5. Create the ‘after’ shot. Ask Gemini to generate the same man again, this time wearing the trousers. Describe the exact pair the person you are pranking owns, e.g. “dark grey baggy tracksuit bottoms with a drawstring.”
  6. Time to prank. Once you’ve got all the images, send them one by one to your partner or flatmate and watch their confusion.
