We’re recruiting: Here’s exactly why you should come and write for The Cardiff Tab

Calling all 2025 freshers: Are you interested in getting your voice out there and gaining some journalism experience? If you are, then The Cardiff Tab is the place for you.

We are looking for the best new writers to join our team this year and help us get exciting and adventurous articles out there. Whether you’re more into the socials side and would prefer to be making memes, or you want to get stuck into lighthearted features or hard hitting news, there’s something for everyone.

No prior experience is required, either. You just need to be a current student at a university in Cardiff.

Come join us for our open meeting on Wednesday September 30th at 5pm at The Woodville pub near the Students’ Union. We will be introducing The Cardiff Tab and showing you the types of things you can get up to if you join, from invaluable journalism experience to fun socials.

And, if you still need convincing, here are five things that’ll make joining The Cardiff Tab the best thing you do this year.

1. Get first dibs on breaking news

You will be one of the first to know when any breaking news comes out in Cardiff and you’ll get the chance to write about it. News is a large section of The Cardiff Tab and there are daily commissions covering a huge range of topics. You will have the chance to craft your own angle on the article and at times interview those who are affected.

As long as your story is about a university in Cardiff, or a Cardiff student, you have the opportunity to pitch it. Writers have lots of flexibility, whether that’s choosing from a weekly commissions list and writing a timely festive feature, or spotting something on campus and approaching an editor about a fresh story angle. This is a chance you may not get elsewhere, but it’s a really useful one to find the articles you enjoy writing the most.

3. Be a part of a national team

The Cardiff Tab is a local branch of The Tab, a nationally respected outlet and the biggest student news site in the country. Joining us means you’ll be able to collaborate and meet other journalists from across the board. It’s a great way of getting your foot in the door and having that extra knowledge before graduating.

4. Learn new things and bulk up your CV

A part of joining The Cardiff Tab is learning new things and gaining experience in editorial decision making. You’ll be learning how to follow the style guide and edit your articles to decide what parts may be more necessary than others. These skills will be incredibly useful on your CV and will help you stand out in front of employers in a competitive industry.

5. Meet new people

Last but not least, you’ll get the chance to make new friends and meet people in the team who have similar interests and ambitions as you. We host socials and weekly meetings, where there’s quizzes, the opportunity to bounce around new ideas, and just have a chat with like-minded people.
