Everyone is just finding out the story behind the awkward party meme and I am shook
I always thought it was a stock photo, but here’s what they’re actually glaring at
We all know the awkward party meme, because it’s an image that truly puts the fear of god in us all. Never has an image perfectly summed up exactly how it feels to beg for control of the aux at a house party and queue a load of songs you know full well absolutely slap only to get this dismal reaction. The image, seemingly of an American house party and featuring loads of young people staring at the camera and giving the dirtiest look imaginable whilst clutching the iconic red party cups. It’s one of the golden pantheon inclusions of memes that have been in circulation for so long with such frequency you probably haven’t even spared a thought for its origins. I always thought the awkward party meme was actually just a stock image, but everyone is just finding out its origins and I had no clue this was the origin of where the classic image was taken from.
It’s a screenshot from a video!?
The iconic awkward party meme has its origin is a screenshot taken from a video on YouTube titled Don’t Stop The Music, posted 12 years ago by sketch comedy creator Jimmy Tatro. Don’t Stop The Music is a sketch about awkward social interactions and parodies an American house party and how that if the music ended you’d overhear the most abhorrent things. Seeing this picture in motion feels like the Mona Lisa being painted.

The Jimmy character is talking to his mate about how a doctor wanted to shove a thermometer up his, ahem, arse. And then, someone unplugs the music at the party and out of context the character says to another lad “You can stick that thing in my mouth all you want but don’t stick it up my a*sehole.” Because the music’s stopped the whole party hears and looks around, hence the iconic meme was born.
Jimmy Tatro has had a mega career since his YouTube sketch days, and not content with giving us the classic meme he’s also starred in films and had major roles in TV shows.
I can’t believe all my life I thought this classic meme was just a stock image and there’s so much lore behind it!
