Wait, Spotify just launched DMs!? Here’s how to message your mates after the update
No more having to spam Spotify links on WhatsApp
Spotify just launched one of its wildest features ever, and now you can actually send messages in the app as the streaming service has launched a brand new feature that let’s you chat away with your mates directly via the app rather than having to send stuff to them on external platforms. It’s kind of wild, and a feature that I’ve actually wanted for a while – and not only that but if you speak to someone you’ve already sent a lot of Spotify links to the app already has a complete chat history for you. Which honestly, blew my mind and was a nice swipe up through memory lane thinking of all the stuff I’ve sent my mates on WhatsApp over the years. Here’s how you can activate Spotify Messages and how to start sending your mates DMs.
It’s really simple to set up
If you’re looking for the new feature, which has been rolling out to users over the past week – so if you don’t have it yet, it’s probing coming, then click on your profile in the top left corner when you’re on the Spotify homepage on the mobile app.

Via Spotify
You can also share directly from the song you’re listening to and you’ll see recommendations of Spotify accounts you’ve interacted with as suggestions. These include people you have a collaborative playlist with or have recently been in a jam session with – or those you’ve sent content to who have linked their number to Spotify. Here’s the best way to do it:
- Share Spotify content and start a message in-app with people you’ve interacted with before through Spotify.
- When listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook in the now playing view at the bottom, tap the share icon, select a friend, and hit send.
- Once you accept a message request, you’ll be able to react with emojis, send texts, and seamlessly share Spotify content back and forth. Access Messages by going to your profile photo in the top left corner.

Whilst it’s going to be a lot more convenient not having to spam external links to people you want to listen to your playlists, Spotify don’t actually want this to replace off app conversations about Spotify. The company said “Messages on Spotify are designed to complement these integrations, not replace them, and we’re excited to continue offering more ways to drive hype for the Spotify content you love, wherever you are.”
Obviously there are safety measures in place so you can’t just message anyone, and users can choose to accept or decline any message request. But if you want to slide into the DMs of someone with excellent music taste, Spotify Messages might be your best shot.
