Omg, we’re finally getting never before seen footage of Stars Hollow in new Gilmore Girls doc

Autumn is on the way, and so is the first official Gilmore Girls documentary.

Lauren Graham, who starred in the series as Lorelai Gilmore, announced on Instagram last night that a Gilmore Girls documentary is officially in the works for HBO Max. She casually captioned the post: “Oh hey, hi… we’re making a documentary.”

As if this news hasn’t made my whole week. One X user commented that they would be watching it with “Coffee in one hand. Tissues in the other”. I think I’ll be joining them!

Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband, executive producer Daniel Palladino, announced that the film will be told from their perspectives. They explained the documentary “reveals how the show eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon by unpacking the unique alchemy of the creators, cast, crew and collaborators.

“The film includes never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage and script pages.” 

“Finally something that justifies my 15 rewatches”, one user on X commented – I’m glad it wasn’t just me. 

Additionally, the film will feature interviews with Lauren Graham (Lorelai), as well as other key cast and crew members from the original series. They haven’t yet announced who else will be featured. I’ve got all my post notifications on until we find out more!

The project currently has no release date, just an announcement that it will be coming “soon” to HBO Max. Also missing from the announcement is a confirmed title, however X users were fast to come up with their own. One user suggested “Oy With The Poodles: A Gilmore Girls Story” – a reference for the hardcore viewers. 

This isn’t the first Gilmore Girls documentary either

Supporters of Gilmore Girls might remember that there’s already been an announcement for a Gilmore Girls documentary. In August 2025, Ink on Paper studios announced it was creating an unauthorised documentary to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary. This was originally called “Searching for Stars Hollow”, but was later renamed to “Drink Coffee, Talk Fast”.

This documentary would reportedly feature interviews with Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore), Jared Padalecki (Dean), Chad Michael Murray (Tristan), and Keiko Agena (Lane Kim). However, a release date was never given, and little has been heard about the documentary since its initial announcement. 

Notably missing from this list were the main Gilmore Girls, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel (Rory). Therefore, following the announcement that Lauren Graham would be appearing in the new official documentary, viewers were quick to speculate on social media.

According to one user, Lauren Graham had previously said she wouldn’t appear in anything Gilmore Girls-related without Amy Sherman-Palladino’s permission. This led to speculation that “Searching for Stars Hollow” was created without the series creator’s approval, and worries that the cast members who were set to appear in the unofficial documentary might not be invited to join the new film. I’m picturing a Gilmore Girls documentary without Kelly Bishop… and it’s not something I can even imagine. 

Some viewers are disappointed that this announcement wasn’t another “movie or show of them”, following the cliffhanger fans were left with at the end of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

However, others commented: “Am I the only one who suspects they are setting up another reboot – this time with Rory and her child?” Please let this be true – I NEED to know who the father of Rory’s baby is!!
