Listen up, these are the 10 cheapest UK uni cities for students to rent in during 2025
I guess you should’ve gone to uni here instead
Going to uni in the UK is horrifyingly expensive. Tuition fees cost a fortune, maintenance loans barely cover rent, and you still need to buy enough coffees to get you through your 9ams. Here’s a guide to the 10 cheapest UK uni cities for students to rent during 2025. You might as well save money where you can, right?
The absolute cheapest place for students to live in 2025 is Huddersfield. The rent there for students is only £106 per week.
Sheffield is the only city on this list that’s home to a Russell Group uni – the imaginatively-named University of Sheffield. Most Russell Group unis are in really expensive places to live. This is a huge problem. For UK society to actually become less elitist, the top universities need to be more accessible to students from less privileged backgrounds.
The student accommodation site StuRents helpfully worked out the average amount students have to spend on rent each week in each uni city. The figures have been weighted to take into account how many private halls are in that city, by the way.
So, here are the 10 cheapest UK uni cities for students to rent in, plus a handy list of which unis have campuses in that city:
10. Leicester – £131 per week
De Montfort University, University of Leicester
9. Swansea – £130 per week
Swansea University, University of Wales Trinity St David (which also has large campuses in other cities)
