Bob the Drag Queen and Yvie Oddly reveal if going on Drag Race was ‘a curse’

‘Do you ever hunger to be put on a poster without having RuPaul’s Drag Race above your name?’

Going on RuPaul’s Drag Race is of course life changing, no matter if you win the show or if you sashay away first. Life changing often for the best – with queens getting a huge platform that they could have only dreamed of before RuPaul created Drag Race and launched so many careers onto a world stage. But not everything is aways rosy with the world that Drag Race fame gives you, even if you’re a winner of the show. Many queens have lamented the legacy of Drag Race and the negative side of what the show gives you, and now two winners of the show – Bob the Drag Queen and Yvie Oddly discuss quite candidly whether going on Drag Race is a blessing for their careers or if it’s actually a curse.

The conversation was so insightful

As Yvie Oddly and Bob the Drag Queen appeared on the High Key podcast, the host asked the Drag Race legends if going on the show was a blessing or a curse for them. Yvie is quick to say “both”.

Bob says “For me Drag Race is a blessing. I said it on the show and I’ll say it again. I got to be on my favourite TV show. I got to win my favourite TV show. I got to see how the sausage is made and I came out and I still ate sausage. I don’t have to go back to the factory again to enjoy the sausage. I can make review shows about the sausage.”

Yvie elaborates “I acknowledge that it’s a blessing, too. Drag Race literally f*cking changed my life before I had a dream of being on it – and so much in the same way, getting to that point and winning were literally dreams come true. [To Bob] I mean, maybe you’re at a different level in your career than I am but do you ever hunger to be put on the poster without ever having RuPaul’s Drag Race above your name?”

Bob then refers to his time opening up for Madonna, on her massive Celebration greatest hits world tour – where Bob pretty much was the MC for the whole show. “I do get to be on posters without RuPaul’s Drag Race on there – but now I’m on a big poster but it says The Celebration Tour and Madonna in giant words, and me in the bottom right corner and it says [small, squeaky voice] Bob the Drag Queen.”

The pair’s comments have been met with criticism slightly from fans, with some finding Yvie’s comments ungrateful. Bob was called out for not being in awe of how big an achievement the Madonna poster feature was in the grand scheme of things. Even RuPaul has never had that!
