Lancaster’s Kanteena music venue to close at end of year

The music venue, located in Brewery Lane, is due to close after six years

Popular music venue Kanteena is set to close after a final New Year’s Eve party at the end of this year.

Kanteena has been a staple of the Lancaster music scene for six years and played a prominent role in the Lancaster Music Festival.

The venue announced its closure on Facebook and hinted at potentially bigger things to common the future.

In its announcement, Kanteena said: “When we began building Kanteena at Brewery Lane six years ago, we always knew it was meant to be temporary.

“At the time, we expected to be here for no more than three years. As it stands, the notice we’ve been given is that this New Years Eve (no sooner) will be our last night of Kanteena at Brewery Lane.”

Kanteena has been known to host numerous music acts, including The Zutons and Lancaster band The Lovely Eggs, as well as a variety of tribute acts. The venue said it would “love to stay, but when your time’s up, your time’s up”.
Regarding the nature of the closure, the venue explained: ” Just to be clear. There is no drama. No one is ill. There are no financial issues and no secrets or scams. Our landlords have been brilliant throughout. Honouring every promise, including giving us plenty of time to wrap things up properly.”
Kanteena further added that it is still booking acts until the end of the year and organising “an epic farewell party for New Year’s Eve” and said it is “determined to give you all a good time until [they] close”.
The venue has since announced  tribute band Definitely Oasis as one of the acts for the New Year’s Eve party after the band’s multiple sell-out events in years previously.
Kanteena also hinted at a continuation beyond the Brewery Lane location, saying: “We’ve had an amazing six years here, and we’re not slowing down now. Not a chance!”
The venue further added: “As for what comes next—plans are ‘brewing’, but nothing’s set in stone just yet.”
The establishment thanked its supporters and credits them with its success, and signed off with “here’s to one final season at Brewery Lane— Let’s make it count”.
Imminent acts before the closure at the Kanteena include tribute bands to The Smiths, The Stone Roses, and Led Zeppelin; as well as Radio 2 DJ Trevor Nelson.
Like years previously, Kanteena is holding birthday party celebrating the venue’s sixth year on Saturday 11th October with free entry tickets available here.
Early bird tickets for the Definitely Oasis tribute band at the New Years Eve party are available for a limited time here.
