Influencer dad is getting mercilessly dragged for throwing son off cliff to ‘teach him a lesson’

The viral video has ignited fierce debate

Father of three, Garrett Gee, the patriarch of the Bucket List Family, is used to attention online, but after throwing his 7-year-old son off a cliff to “teach him a lesson”, he’s feeling the wrath of people on Instagram.

The Bucket List Family are an influencer family with 3.1 million followers on Instagram and 1.49 million subscribers on YouTube. Both Garrett and his wife Jessica now work as “full-time travel journalists” as they whisk their family off to practically every country on the planet.

In a now-viral post that has nearly 80k likes and 3.1 million views, Garrett Gee could be seen with his son Calihan on top of a cliff face in Lake Powell, Colorado. After admitting that “most people won’t love” what they’re about to watch, Garrett grabbed his screaming son to throw him into the lake below.

Captioning the post, the dad explained his reasoning behind the “lesson” and how “We took our youngest Cali to a cliff height that we knew he would be safe.”

He wrote: “This is NOT parental advice. This is NOT something I advise you try. Also, this is NOT something we’ve done with all of our kids. Each kid is quite different so the way we parent, discipline, and teach HOW TO CLIFF JUMP is quite different. For sure 1st priority is safety. 2nd is learning that YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS. 3rd is HAVE FUN.

“Really the biggest danger would be if he hesitated, didn’t jump far out, and fell down the cliff side. So to be extra safe, because he wanted to jump but was not feeling confident.. I threw him.

“Eventually, a baby eagle needs to leave the nest… or be tossed out of the nest. And learn HE CAN FLY! But warning: teaching your kids to be brave starts to backfire when they become older and begin jumping from heights that you don’t even dare!!”

People have been debating the video in the comments.

Whilst there were hundreds of comments applauding Garrett Gee’s parenting style, there were just as many condemning his actions.

One person wrote: “Can’t wait for the Netflix specials – first series will glorify them as fantastic family of fun and adventure. Then, the follow up with be on inside story of growing up in this family – insane pressure to “smile” for 3 million people when you’re terrified. Ugh. Seen this drama before. Doesn’t end well.”

“God forbid he would of hit his head on that rock or not resurfaced. You and your wife would not be able to live with yourself. What if he got caught on a branch from a tree growing underneath the surface,” another wrote.

“Trauma therapy up ahead for these kids,” someone else added, as another agreed with, “I don’t like it and do not agree. Guess the money-making works for you. Child abuse.”
