Rose West’s chilling reaction to Fred’s death revealed by former prison governor

‘She blinked a couple of times’

Netflix’s new true crime series, Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story was released last week. It explores the horrific murders committed by the couple between 1967 and 1987. They were finally uncovered in the 1990s. While the doc revisits the disturbing events that led to Fred West taking his own life before he could stand trial, a former prison governor has now shared what Rose West did, or didn’t do, when she found out about her husband’s suic*de. And her reaction was nothing short of chilling.

Vanessa Frake-Harris, a former prison governor, who was with Rose when the news was delivered, said she showed no visible emotion. “I told her, along with the duty governor, that Fred had committed suic*de and there was no emotion,” she told The Sun. “She blinked a couple of times and then said, ‘Oh right’. She didn’t even flinch, nothing had altered in her expression.”

Vanessa described her as calm and in control, even suggesting that Rose may have seen her husband’s death as a way to avoid taking full responsibility for their crimes. “I firmly believe she felt that with Fred dying, she would get off all of the charges. There was almost a glint in her eye as if to say, ‘OK, he’s dead, he can take the rap for it. I’m happy to plead to the lesser charges’.”

Rose was convicted and sentenced for 10 murders

Despite Fred’s suic*de, Rose West stood trial later that year. In November 1995, she was found guilty of murdering 10 girls and women. Her victims included her own daughter, Heather West, and stepdaughter, Charmaine. She was sentenced to life in prison with a whole life tariff, meaning she will never be released.

So, where is Rose West now?

Now 71, Rose West is currently serving her sentence at HMP New Hall in West Yorkshire. She was moved there in 2019 from Low Newton Prison. Reports over the years have described her as compliant and quiet. But former staff have said she remains manipulative and has shown no signs of remorse.
