Fred and Rose West: What 25 Cromwell Street ‘house of horrors’ looks like now

Netflix has just released Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story, which details the crimes that took place at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester. Between 1967 and 1987, the couple tortured, assaulted and killed an unknown number of women at their home.

25 Cromwell Street was dubbed the “House of Horrors” because of the horrific events that took place there. Police were first prompted to the couple and their family, after reports their children had been joking that if they misbehaved, their parents had said they’d end up “under the patio” like their sister. Their sister was Heather West, who hadn’t been seen for years, but was never reported as missing.

Following this, police dug up the patio at 25 Cromwell Street. But what they found was just the beginning. Remains were found in the garden, and later under the floorboards of the house.

Rose West is currently serving a life sentence. In 1995, she was found guilty of murdering 10 girls and women, which included her 16-year-old daughter Heather, and her eight-year-old stepdaughter, Charmaine. Fred West never faced a trial, as he took his own life in prison, in 1995. But what happened to their home?

What does 25 Cromwell Street look like now?

Today, 25 Cromwell Street no longer exists. The house there has been completely demolished. Now, a walkway is in its place. Two years after Fred and Rose West were arrested, the decision to demolish the house was made.

It was demolished by Gloucester City Council in October 1996. The decision behind this was mainly worry the property would become a dark tourism hotspot, with people coming to look at where the horrific crimes took place. Rubble and waste from the building was all destroyed, so there was no risk of anyone keeping any as souvenirs.

As shown on Google Maps, the land the house once stood on is a pathed walk, with grass either side. The walkway leads to St Michael’s Square.
