What Molly Martens’ life is like now, following A Deadly American Marriage on Netflix

She’s living under strict new rules

Right now, everyone is talking about the story of Molly Martens and her husband Jason Corbett. A documentary about Jason’s death, A Deadly American Marriage, has gone straight into the number one spot on Netflix.

Jason Corbett was killed in 2015. He died at the hands of his wife Molly Martens, and her former FBI father, Thomas Martens. At first it looked like the two had used excessive force and beaten Jason to death with a brick and a baseball bat. It looked as though Molly Martens may have wanted custody of Jason’s two children, Jack and Sarah.

However, Molly claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse, and in that moment, feared for her life. Her father Thomas claimed he entered the room after hearing Molly screaming, and Jason was strangling her. He said he did what he did to save his daughter’s life.

Molly and Jason first met when he advertised for an au pair to help look after his children, after the death of his first wife, and their biological mother. Molly and Jason became a couple in 2011, and moved from Ireland to the US – where Molly was from. Four years later, Jason was killed.

In 2016, Molly and Thomas were charged with second degree murder and voluntary manslaughter, and the following month plead not guilty. They were found guilty, and sentenced to between 20 and 25 years in prison. But, following an appeal, the decision was overturned. The case was open once again.

In 2023, Molly and Thomas Martens agreed to plea deals, and were sentenced to 51 to 74 months in prison. They were released in June 2024, due to previous time served.

As it stands, Molly and her father Thomas are still subject to supervision. They are subject to post-release supervision by probation services for one year. Under this, they are not required to still live in North Carolina, as this state has monitoring arrangements with other states. This often involves electronic tagging.

As they are both convicted felons, Molly Martens and her father are now not allowed to live at the same address. Tom Martens lives at his family home, in Knoxville, Tennessee. They are still allowed to visit one another, for family occasions.

It was reported that during her one-year probation period, Molly had plans to live with one of her brothers in North Carolina. According to The Times, Molly stated she wanted to be “far away” from the home she and Jason once shared.

Molly is not allowed to make contact with Jack or Sarah Corbett, due to a court order. She is also subject to regular drug tests. Molly is able to travel around the United States, but must first notify authorities. She is not allowed any weapons of any kind, and must meet a supervising officer as directed and submit to warrantless searches. Any breach of this, and Molly will risk going back to jail.

Brad Deen, communications officer at the North Carolina department of adult correction, said: “Both [Tom and Molly] will serve their 12 months of post-release supervision in Tennessee under an interstate compact, which is a fairly common circumstance. They will be subject to North Carolina conditions, but Tennessee department of corrections will supervise.”
