Omg, Sydney Sweeney is getting dragged for the inspiration behind her Met Gala look
People have called the choice ‘inappropriate’
Sydney Sweeney is getting absolutely ravaged on Twitter over the “inappropriate” and “off-theme” gown she chose for the 2025 Met Gala. This was officially her fourth time at the star-studded event after somewhat lacklustre appearances in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.
This year, Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour designated the theme as Tailored for You, a continuation of the Met’s spring exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Special attention was to be paid to Black dandyism, as Vogue explained: “It has been about identity, power, and resistance. In a world where Black people have been marginalised, the dandy became a figure who defied the rigid categories of race and class that sought to confine them.”
Naturally, we armchair fashion experts expected lots of tributes to Black designers, themes, and people throughout history. Some people excelled, namely Doja Cat, Doechii, and Rihanna, but others, such as Lisa, fell short. Though Sydney Sweeney looked her usual elegant self at the Met Gala, her chosen ensemble has since been criticised on Twitter – here’s why.
Sydney Sweeney said I don’t give a faulk what tonight’s theme is…Black Dandyism? Superfine: Tailoring Black Style? Ok well let me give y’all this *black* beaded dress that’s totally off theme…Oh and I’m honoring a white woman tonight!

Okay, so why was Sydney Sweeney getting dragged?

On Monday, Sydney Sweeney was pictured at the Met Gala in a custom Miu Miu gown that came complete with beaded fringe, a shockingly huge buckle, and a plunging neckline. She was also draped in De Beers diamonds, specifically a 9-carat ring she designed and purchased herself. Sydney looked expensive to say the least, but people have argued that she missed the mark completely with her inspiration behind the look.

” I always feel that [Miu Miu] just brings such beautiful stories to every dress,” she said on the red carpet. “So this is actually paying homage to Kim Novak, and I’m doing a movie with Colman Domingo … so we wanted to really just bring that to life.”
The Kim Novak reference is a nod to her upcoming role in a biopic about the actress’s interracial romance with Sammy Davis Jr in the 1950s. The couple was subjected to abhorrent racism at the time, but upcoming project aside, people on Twitter said it was inappropriate for Sydney to centre a white woman in an event about Black style.

“Sydney Sweeney said I don’t give a f**k what tonight’s theme is…Black Dandyism? Superfine: Tailoring Black Style? Ok, well let me give y’all this *black* beaded dress that’s totally off theme…Oh, and I’m honouring a white woman tonight! I’m giving Sydney an F,” one person said.
“Just found out what the Met Gala theme was and it clicked when I saw Sydney Sweeney single edge swooped… chile,” another wrote.
Someone else said: “Lisa got Rosa Parks all over her butt cheeks, Wisdom was not invited, Sydney Sweeney paying homage to a white woman, Lorde looking stupid asf, this is the worst Met Gala in history as we fkn speak…”
Then there’s the argument that she must have missed the Met Gala email, because where on her outfit was there tailoring?
“I feel like her stylist let her down,” someone suggested, and I have to agree.
