Penn Badgley just revealed who he thinks Gossip Girl should’ve been, and he’s so right

13 years after the show ended, Penn Badgley has shared who he thinks Gossip Girl should have been, and he agrees with the biggest theory ever.

His character Dan Humphrey turned out to be the Upper East Side’s famous gossip blogger in a huge twist that nobody saw coming. It was a great ending, but everyone couldn’t help but think another character should have been Gossip Girl.

Speaking on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, Penn said: “It wouldn’t have made sense to anybody, but we all wanted it to be Dorota.”

In the CW teen drama based on the novels by Cecily Brooke von Ziegesar, Dorota is Blair Waldorf’s iconic maid. She’s only a minor character, but she quickly became a firm favourite because of her funny, weird and loveable personality.

However, according to the actor, Dorota never could have been Gossip Girl because it has to be a “series regular” and  “one of the core six”. If it isn’t one of the main characters, “nobody cares” – so the producers knew it would be one of them all along.

The show’s original writer Joshua Safran once revealed that he never actually intended for Dan to be Gossip Girl at all.

Speaking at the Vulture Festival in 2019, he said: “Dan was not my intended Gossip Girl… But I understand why Dan was Gossip Girl. I just had my heart set on Nate.”

Safran left Gossip Girl after the end of the fifth season, so he didn’t get to choose who the gossip blogger would be.

On Call Her Daddy, Penn also spoke out the moment he found out he was Gossip Girl, and he was in the hair and makeup room at the time.

“I remember just being like, ‘Huh, I’m trying to math it. It’s tough. Alright. And we’ve got to shoot tomorrow. Cool’,” he said.

Basically, he found out really late and they had to start shooting the Gossip Girl scenes the next day, so he didn’t really have time to process it.

Ultimately, Dan does make the most sense. Can you imagine Nate as Gossip Girl?! That would be wild.
