It’s back! The seven theories of how season five of YOU on Netflix will end

After what feels like a million years, season five of YOU is finally here – so loads of people are sharing their theories of what might happen. The fifth season of the show is the last one, so we will be getting a full conclusion to Joe Goldberg’s killing ways.

The show is based on a book series, but has already deviated majorly from the books, as the third saw Joe arrested. This basically means it’s free rein for how Netflix wants it all to end. At the end of season four, Joe had escaped with Kate, which means he has all the resource and money from her billionaire father. They’re back in New York, which could spell trouble.

Joe will turn himself in

At the end of YOU season four, it looked as though Joe was losing touch slightly. I mean, it’s been a long time coming. Someone on Reddit noted this, and said they think this will be his downfall as the show wraps up.

They said: “We saw in season four that Joe was slowly starting to lose touch of himself and his goals, which is evident by the bridge scene and from a new season five teaser. He seems to be talking directly to himself and questioning if anything will ever be enough for him. Which is making me think he might just turn himself in or confess everything he’s done to the public at the end of season five.”

“Joe has to either get killed or get arrested at this point. Kate is somehow going to be his downfall,” one person on Reddit said. Another added: “Lady Phoebe returns and kills Joe.” A lot of people think the season won’t end well for Joe, and the amount of witnesses he has left behind will be his downfall in the end.

Joe will die

A popular theory is that if Joe doesn’t get caught and arrested, he’ll have to die. Many of us are thinking he can’t just get away with everything he’s done. It’s a fair point!

“The perfect ending to YOU would be Joe getting k-lled off just like he did the others,” one person said on Twitter, underneath Netflix sharing a teaser video. Another added: “I’m excited for the end of this show. It was a season too long but I’m happy to see how they wrap things up. He’s got to die.”

Joe is getting too big for his boots in New York, and his past will catch up on him

Joe and Kate are back in New York, where it all began for Joe. This could be a blissful life for him back at his roots, if it weren’t for all the skeletons (quite literally) there.

It some pictures from behind the scenes of filming, it looks as though Joe and Kate are enjoying the finer things in life and have become low-key celebs in New York. The pictures show them getting out of a fancy car and stepping out at a red carpet event. So, this is where the theory comes in.

In the third YOU book, people in New York have started to realise more about Joe. In the book, putting together some of the clues about Joe, his connections to Beck and his whereabouts when Peach died, Dr Nicky (who Joe framed for Beck’s murder) and an officer realise Joe is very much of interest. Plus, didn’t Joe cart Ellie off to New York for that writing class with the money he was giving her?

Basically, there are lots of people who know (and hate) Joe in New York, which is why he might want to keep a slightly lower profile than being papped at celeb events. Penn Badgley previously teased a familiar face from Joe’s past will come back to haunt him in season five, creating problems for his NYC return.

If Joe is now living a very public life and flaunting his wealth, there are many, many people in New York who will recognise him and probably not take too well to him being able to live like this. Will he end up dead at the hands of everyone he ever wronged?

It was all in Joe’s head

One of the more wild theories, but it could end in YOU season five that everything was in Joe’s head. One person on Reddit said: “My theory is Joe is in a psychiatric facility for the criminally insane. We see his psychiatrist is named Dr. Nicky, he has nurses named Beck, Kate and Marienne, and they tell him he’s been there since he was a teen, after he killed both his parents and a lot of what we think happened were just his delusions.” Interesting?

Joe’s new obsession will kill him

You know what, I think it’s about time Joe obsessed over a woman who ended up being the one to end it all. We came so close with Love, and maybe even with Marienne, but so far, no luck. In season five, there’s a new woman in Joe Goldberg’s life: Bronte.

Her character is described as “enigmatic” and she makes Joe question everything he’s ever become. Her full character description reads: “An enigmatic and free-spirited playwright who comes to work for Goldberg at his bookstore. As the two connect over literature and loss, she stokes in him a nostalgia for his former self, causing him to question everything his life has become.”

With this being the final season, Bronte will likely be crucial to the conclusion of Joe’s story. Go on Bronte, do what we’ve all been waiting for.

The wildest of theories: Henry takes control

We’ve seen from teasers that Joe’s son with Love, Henry, is back. And, what if he finds out the monster his dad really is? “Henry finds out what his father is and locks him in the cage. The end,” said one person on Reddit. You know what? I want this one the most.
