The nine crazy hidden details you missed in Black Mirror’s first episode Common People

There are so many Easter Eggs!

Black Mirror is back with season seven and the first episode, Common People, had everyone hooked, but there are loads of hidden details I bet you missed.

It’s about a teacher called Amanda who falls into a coma after a medical emergency, and her husband signs her up to a new technology to keep her alive.

Things seem great at first, but the consequences of the high-tech subscription service called Rivermind soon become obvious, and it comes at a huge cost.

Here are nine crazy Easter Eggs you didn’t spot in Common People that all relate to other Black Mirror episodes.

The name of the school Amanda works at

Amanda is a teacher at a primary school, but did you catch the name of the school? It’s called Cooper Elementary, which is a reference to an old episode called Playtest about a guy called Cooper Redfield who signs up to test a new video game.

What Amanda is teaching the kids

Another Easter Egg you probably missed about the school is what Amanda is teaching the kids about. On the whiteboard are ADIs, the robot bee drones that we first saw in an old episode called Hated In The Nation.

The county they drive to for their anniversary

When Amanda and Mike go out for their anniversary, they drive through Palmer County, which is a reference to another episode in this season, Hotel Reverie. Alex Palmer is the new character that Brandy is playing in the movie.

The name of the bar, The Juniper Lodge

There’s also a hidden reference in the name of the bar Amanda and Mike go to, The Juniper Lodge, which is a reference to the old episode called San Junipero. The song they listen to also features in every season of Black Mirror.

The company that makes the drink

At work, Mike speaks to a guy called Shane. On the cup he is holding, it says the drink is made by a company called Ditta, which is the same company as in episode two, Bête Noire. Ditta is also on the vending machine in the Rivermind office.

The name of the other office

When Mike and Amanda go to visit the Rivermind employee, it says “Skillane Legal” on the opposite office, which is a direct reference to Victoria Skillane, the main character in the old episode White Bear.

Usernames on the Dumb Dummies site

While Mike is streaming on the Dumb Dummies site, there are Easter Eggs in the online usernames. One says “I_Am_Waldo” which is a reference to The Waldo Moment and another says “UrAwful” which relates to Joan Is Awful.

A flag in The Juniper Lodge

When the couple goes back to The Juniper Lodge while Amanda is on Rivermind Lux, there’s a flag that says “Changed” which is another reference to the Black Mirror season two episode White Bear.

The movies showing at the cinema

Finally, when Mike and Amanda are driving home from the Rivermind hospital, there’s a cinema which is showing two films, Hotel Reverie and I Used To Be Funny, which is directed by the same woman who did Joan Is Awful.
