Where Long Island serial killer chief Jimmy Burke is now, from jail time to second arrest
He was in charge of the Gilgo Beach murder investigation
After Netflix’s new documentary about the Long Island serial killer, Gone Girls, everyone is shocked by the corruption of police offer James ‘Jimmy’ Burke.
He was appointed chief of the Suffolk County Police Department in 2012 and remained in the position until 2015, so he was in charge of the Gilgo Beach murder investigation.
Burke slowed down the investigation in many ways, including limiting the FBI’s involvement and stopping collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.
His controversies didn’t stop when he resigned from the position in 2015 either.

Jimmy Burke was jailed for 46 months
In May 2013, the FBI opened an investigation into Burke after he allegedly beat a suspect in police custody. Christopher Loeb had been arrested for breaking into Burke’s unlocked vehicle and stealing a gun belt, ammunition, a box of cigars and a bag containing sex toys and pornography.
The police officer was charged with assaulting the man and pleaded guilty to reduced charges in February 2016. In November 2016, he was sentenced to 46 months in prison and three years of supervised release for assault and the obstruction of justice, and his sentence began in January 2017, the US Attorney’s Office reveals.
He served his jail sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Allenwood Low but was released to house arrest early in November 2018. He completed his sentence in April 2019, but has since been arrested again.
He was arrested again in 2023
In August 2023, the former police officer was then arrested for public lewdness, offering a sex act, and unlawful solicitation after he allegedly exposed himself to a male park ranger at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Farmingville, Suffolk County.

Suffolk County Executive regrets promoting him
Former Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has spoken out about how much he regrets ever appointing Burke as chief in 2012, telling The Oneida Daily Dispatch: “Jim Burke, someone I entrusted with great responsibility, lied to my face for nearly three years and orchestrated a cover-up to perpetuate that lie.”
Many of his decisions in the Gilgo Beach case, such as limiting the FBI’s involvement, were made to cover up his own assault on Christopher Loeb, and the Long Island victims could have been brought justice sooner.
