Adolescence writer confirms whether the Netflix show is actually getting a season two
People think a second series should tell Katie’s story
Adolescence is Netflix’s most-watched limited series ever after just two weeks, with a whopping 66.3 million views, and the writer has just confirmed its future.
“Execs are thrilled by the results and acclaim for Adolescence,” a source told The Sun last week. “It’s seen as a format that can run and run, at least to a second series if not further, as it could take in a different teen issue each series.”
This got people excited that season two could be on the cards, and many think a second season should tell the story from Katie’s point of view, the teenager who was murdered by 13-year-old Jamie.
However, writer Jack Thorne sadly confirmed that they won’t be making a second season during an interview on This Morning, and he explained two important reasons why.
“The first is, I don’t think we’re the right people to tell Katie’s story,” he said. “I think there are other makers out there that could tell beautiful dramas about Katie or girls like Katie, and that those shows should be made.”

“Our aim was to try and tell Jamie’s story as fully as we possibly could, and maybe trying to tell her story would dilute that in some way and maybe we would be inadequate for that task.”
“The second thing in terms of a second series is I think Jamie’s story is finished,” the writer continued. “I don’t think there’s anywhere more we can take Jamie, so I don’t think there is a series two.”
“We’d love to explore the one-shot format in another way. We’d love to tell other stories with it, but I don’t think a series two of Adolescence is quite right for us.”
