A Birmingham University professor has been sentenced for making over 1,500 indecent images of children.

Artur Majewski, 50, was sentenced today (31st January) at Worcester Crown Court after pleading guilty to numerous charges.

Majewski has been employed at the University of Birmingham since 2008, working as a research fellow until 2023, then becoming an associate lecturer in the School of Engineering. He is currently suspended from this role.

The professor’s most severe charge was being in possession of 21 category A images. Images in this category can depict penetrative sexual activity and extreme indecent sexual acts from children.

However, the total number of indecent images of children ranging across categories A, B, and C was 1,568.

As well as his child sex offence charges, Majewski has also pleaded guilty to the possession of an image including bestiality. The image portrayed a person performing intercourse with a live animal.

Majewski was given an eight month suspended sentence, and he must take part in 200 days of unpaid work.

Judge HHJ Burbidge KC also sentenced him to do 20 rehabilitation activity requirement (RAR) days, and pay £150 in costs. Majewski will further be placed under a sexual harm prevention order and be put on the sex offenders’ register, both for 10 years.

A spokesperson from the University of Birmingham told The Birmingham Tab: “The safety of all our students and staff is of paramount importance. When the University became aware of the charges, which we understand do not relate to his employment, the individual was suspended in line with relevant University procedures.

“Any students or staff who may wish to seek support, can do so at any time through our dedicated student helpline UBHeard and our Employee Assistance Programme.
