Right, if you’re like me, all you’ve seen on the internet today is people freaking out about DeepSeek but you have no idea what it actually is. AI is already scary enough on its own, with AI bots replacing many jobs, writing uni essays and taking over X. Why on earth do we need more of this chaos? Here’s what DeepSeek actually is and what it means for the future of AI.
What is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek is a Chinese-made AI model and it’s available on the App Store. It’s a free chatbot which looks and talks almost exactly like ChatGPT. It’s already hit the top of the App Store’s downloads which has sunk some tech stocks. Terrifying!
How is it different to other AI models?
DeepSeek is different because the company claims it was built at a fraction of the cost of other AI models because it uses fewer advanced chips.
This actually caused a huge chip-making company called Nvidia to lose almost $600 billion of its market value on Monday, the biggest one-day loss in US stock market history. Wild!
What does the rest of the world think of DeepSeek?
Most other world leaders are naturally wary of the new app and its abilities. US President Donald Trump said it was a “wake-up call” for US companies who must focus on “competing to win.”
DeepSeek also raises questions about the US government’s efforts to stop Beijing’s push for tech supremacy, given that one of its key restrictions has been a ban on the export of advanced chips to China.
