Body found in river after three week search for missing Edinburgh student

Santra Saju, 22, was last seen on December 6th

The body of an Edinburgh student was found in the Almond River three weeks after she was reported missing.

An international student from Kerala, Santra Saju was last seen on December 6th.

Searches for Santra were called off on December 27th, after a body was recovered from a river near Newbridge in Edinburgh, believed to be that of the 22-year-old student, The Scotsman reports.

The Heriot-Watt University student was last seen between 9:10pm and 9:45pm at an Asda store in Livingston, where she worked. Police released CCTV footage of her last known sighting, where she was seen wearing a black face mask and black coat.

Santra had moved from Perumbavoor in Kerala’s Ernakulam last year to continue her studies in Edinburgh. Both her friends and family described her disappearance as “very out of character”, adding that they were “sick with worry”.

Police were informed of a body in the water around 11.55am on Friday. In a statement, the force confirmed that “formal identification has not yet been completed, however, the family of Santra Saju has been informed.”

The death is not being treated as suspicious and no third-party involvement is suspected.

A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal, police added.
