These are the Russell Group unis with the cleverest lecturers in 2024, and Oxbridge aren’t top

The whole point of Russell Group unis is that they’re the best UK universities for research, so you get taught by the best lecturers. But the brainpower of lecturers really, really varies at different Russell Group unis in 2024.

So, the intelligence company Clarivate has published a new list of the most-cited university researchers in 2024. The lecturers who make this list are supposed to be the top one out of 1,000 in their fields. Here’s a list of how many of these top-tier lecturers work at each of the Russell Group unis in 2024.

Shock horror: Oxbridge don’t have the best lecturers in 2024. Neither the University of Cambridge or the University of Oxford are at the top of this list. The Uni of Oxford does have quite a few more top lecturers than the Uni of Cambridge. But a really rogue uni left them both in the dust and has way more highly cited researchers than either of them.

At the other end, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is right at the bottom. LSE only has two top lecturers. This is so surprising to me, because LSE always comes near the top of university league tables. It literally topped The Times’s university ranking this year. Maybe the lecturers are too busy teaching the students how to sell their souls to corporate finance jobs, and didn’t have time to do as much research?

The Uni of York and the Uni of Warwick also only have two top lecturers. One of Warwick’s top lecturers also works at the University of Bristol, so maybe this uni should only count as having 1.5 top lecturers?

So, without further faffing, here is exactly how many top lecturers all the Russell Group unis have in 2024:
