Things you should do in Sheffield to kickstart the semester with your new flatmates

Moving into university can feel like you’re diving headfirst into the unknown, but don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. Meeting your new flatmates, exploring the campus, and adjusting to an independent lifestyle can be overwhelming, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to create lifelong friendships and make the most of every moment. So, here are some fun recommendations that you can share with your new flatmates to help you settle in that little bit easier.

Play loads of card/board games

This one sounds like a given, but honestly, there’s no better way to break the ice than getting into heated debates over the silly rules of a board game.

A pro tip of mine: learn the rules of Ring of Fire as I guarantee it will be the staple for any pres you attend in first year. Add some classics to the mix – size up your flatmates under the intense pressure of a two-hour game of Monopoly, or if you’re feeling brave try something like Cards of Humanity to push a few boundaries and test how weird everyone’s sense of humour is.

The best part? These games aren’t just fun distractions; they’re perfect for sussing out who’s got the patience of a saint, who’s the ultimate strategist, and who’s just in it for the banter.

If your living in Ranmoor or Endcliffe in your first year, chances are you’ll walk past this gem on your way into uni every day and I’ve got to say, the best pie and chips I have ever tasted came from this place.

As the weather turns colder and you start fancying a proper meal, it is the perfect cosy spot to spend an evening with your new mates. Whether you’re grabbing a bite after a long day of lectures, or just looking for somewhere to chill and have a pint, this place is an absolute must.

Test your brains at the Broomhill Tav quiz

Take your flat down to Broomhill Tav on a Monday night, and chances are, it’ll quickly become a weekly tradition – at least, that’s how it’s went with mine.

Just a short 15 minute walk from Endcliffe Village, this is another great way to spend an evening with everyone. This quiz night is notorious for being pretty much impossible at times with its incredibly niche questions, complex anagrams and its intense tie break questions – but this makes it all the more exciting.

The staff are friendly, welcoming and generous with free shots too, making this an all-round great place to chill. (Heads up: If you’re a Hallamer you might get heavily teased).

Explore the vintage shops

For you vintage lovers – Broomhill and Division Street are packed with fantastic vintage shops where you can find unique pieces without completely draining your student loan.

During Freshers’ Week, keep an eye out for Glass Onion discounts – it’s the perfect chance to grab some funky bits for those themed nights out. From the classic “shit shirt” night to decade throwbacks, you’ll find plenty of options for a good outfit.

Plus, it’s never too early to start planning a group Halloween costume, so get ahead of the game and start collecting some cool pieces.

Now after a week of non-stop parties and club nights, with a pounding headache and a serious lack of daylight, you might find yourself longing for a bit of fresh air.

Luckily, Sheffield is one of the greenest cities in the UK with plenty of spaces where you can recharge. So, throw on that trusty North Face puffer and take a stroll through Endcliffe park or Botanical Gardens with your new pals.

It’s the perfect way to blow away the cobwebs, clear your head and get yourself ready for the actual ‘university’ part of uni life.
