Okay, here’s why everyone’s going crazy for Tim Walz making a JD Vance couch joke
Walz also called Trump and Vance ‘creepy’ and ‘weird as hell’
Yesterday, Vice President Kamala Harris announced that her running mate in her campaign for US presidency will be Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz. On that announcement, the two made their first appearance together as the Democrat ticket and Walz did an (incredibly likeable, I must say) speech where the two pledged they will win the election. But the biggest talking point of this was a joke Tim Walz made at Trump’s VP pick JD Vance, referencing a certain couch rumour. The joke got massive laughs from the crowd, so here’s what went down if you missed the backstory.
Tim Walz kind of brutally roasted JD Vance (and Trump) during his first speech as Kamala Harris’ running mate. In a comment made that got cheers from the crowd, Tim Walz said “Like all regular people I grew up with in the heartland, JD studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires, and then wrote a bestseller trashing that community.
“That’s not what Middle America is. And I got to tell you. I can’t wait to debate the guy… That is, if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up.”

The couch joke from Tim Walz stems from the fact a post went viral which started a rumour that JD Vance had sex with a couch. A parody post had gone viral claiming it was an excerpt from Vance’s best-selling book Hillbilly Elegy. The fake excerpt showed Vance confessing to having sex with a sofa.
The joke got made worse by a fact check from The Associated Press, headlined “No, JD Vance did not have sex with a couch.” This made the memes worse, but it’s true – he didn’t shag a sofa. Although, The Associated Press has since removed its original fact check story.

It didn’t stop Tim Walz from making a wink-wink nudge-nudge joke at its expense yesterday, though. Walz also roasted Trump, saying “He froze in the face of the covid crisis. He drove our economy into the ground. And make no mistake, violent crime was up under Donald Trump — That’s not even counting the crimes he committed.”
