Matthew Macfadyen didn’t think he was ‘dishy enough’ to be Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice
I’ve never disagreed with a statement more
Some people might know Matthew Macfadyen best from his role in Succession, but the romantics among us will absolutely have pined over him as Mr Darcy in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice. I genuinely think about that hand flex on a daily basis. I truly cannot imagine anyone better suited for the role than Matthew, he’s the perfect mix of gruff, bashful and hilariously introverted.
So, imagine my shock, nay horror when I found Matthew Macfadyen not only didn’t think he was “dishy enough” to play Mr Darcy, but that he “didn’t really” enjoy playing him in Pride and Prejudice. I genuinely almost passed out Mrs Bennet style.
In an interview on CBS Mornings, he revealed his true feelings about his brooding character, and I don’t know if I’ll ever recover. He admitted: “I didn’t really enjoy it. I feel bad saying that. There were moments I had a good time, but I wish I enjoyed it more. I wish I was less worried about it. I felt a bit miscast, like, ‘I’m not dishy enough.'” Genuinely think this man must be delusional.
Still, he did say when fans recognise him as Mr Darcy it’s “probably the most flattering thing that happens to me”, so that’s a nice little wholesome moment we can all cling onto. He added: “It’s a good 20 years later, so I think I can’t be ageing that badly.”
