SEATS OF LEARNING TO GET NEW LEGS

You probably won’t even notice. But we will.

Time to visit the Bodleian Library before it is permanently changed is running out, as an invasion of new chairs means that we’ll have to get used to something a little different.

You might not have noticed that the Bodleian Library’s chairs have remained of the same three designs since 1936. You might never have even been inside the Bod. However, change is about to sweep into Oxford’s most recognised landmark, in the form of the furniture.

The suspense was literally killing us.

According to co.design, a new chair is about to make its mark after winning a year long competition starting with 60 entries. It will be afforded the honour of taking up residence in our greatest reference library, joining the esteemed company of only three other designs judged suitable for our rear ends.

The Ikea-esque design came from Baber and Osgerby, well known for designing the London 2012 Olympic torch.

Has science gone too far?

Don’t hold your breath though – these works of art aren’t due to arrive until next year, so you’ll have plenty of time get used to the idea.
