Ducking Un-bill-ievable

Worcester’s new mascot is a mallard. Quackers.

| UPDATED

Thanks to the inspiration of the JCR president and one Rajan Patel, a JCR motion was passed at the end of last term to allow the purchase of Worcester’s new duck mascot.

Why a duck, one might ask? Whilst there may be considerable pride for Christ Church’s famous cathedral or Magdalen’s notorious deer park, nothing comes close to Worcersterite’s love of their lake. A duck was the obvious choice.

Unlike some college mascots, Worcester’s duck is not restricted to the body of one single individual. Mr Patel explained to The Tab, “Lots of people ask to be the mascot, and as it is quite tiring to wear I quite like the rotation system…many of us have had the privilege of being the Worcester duck”.

“Ducking all responsibility, he takes a coffee-break”

On being asked how he feels once inside the costume, Rajan’s reply was honest: “Slightly uncomfortable, but on top of the world as the duck gets a great reception wherever it goes”. He also mentioned that the trousers are particularly comfortable on “hangover days”.

Next on the agenda for the duck is his naming ceremony, which will take place at Worcester’s next bop.

With a few remaining questions lingering unanswered on the mind, The Tab decided to interview the duck himself with a view to understanding more…

“Like a duck out of water”

Why do you appear to be perpetually wearing a snorkel?

Contrary to popular belief, ducks cannot breathe underwater. Also, due to my size and shape I don’t float particularly well. The snorkel allows me to carry out the everyday activities associated with being a duck; namely swimming.

What is the most exciting thing about being Worcester mascot?

The babes.

Have you ever had a run-in with another mascot?

Unfortunately not, it can get quite lonely from time to time. It would be great to get to know another mascot, mainly to discuss tactics and routines to get the crowd going.

“A sitting duck”

If you could eat anything right now, what would you eat?

Bread. For defs.

How do you feel about the stereotype that ducks are clumsy and a little bit dim?

What does ‘stereotype’ mean?…
