Manchester University confirms student has died in Richmond Park accommodation

The student’s identity has not yet been confirmed

A University of Manchester student died on Saturday morning in Richmond Park accommodation.

The university has said: “There is no suggestion that our student has been harmed or has harmed themselves”.

In an email to residents on Saturday, students were told that the security team were called to the residence and that “despite the efforts of the emergency responders” the student “tragically died”.

Police were carrying out on-site investigations on Saturday but have not yet confirmed the identity of the student.

Today, Simon Merrywest, Director of Student Experience, told The Manchester Tab: “Our onsite Campus Support and Security team were called to our residences at Richmond Park on Saturday and we can confirm that despite the efforts of the emergency responders, one of our students has tragically died. All our thoughts and sympathies are with their family and friends and anyone else affected at this dreadful time and we are supporting them in whatever way we can.

“Specific support for students on site was coordinated on Saturday, with flat-to-flat support put in place and briefings. We also organised a wider Fallowfield drop-in session the same morning, for anyone affected. Students can continue to receive help and support through our on-site ResLife teams.

“Police are carrying out their investigations and we are, of course, helping them with those enquiries. Although it will be for the coroner to reach a conclusion, at this early stage there is no suggestion that our student has been harmed or has harmed themselves. As you will appreciate, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”
