I played Pokemon Go without ever playing Pokemon

I am woefully uneducated in types of Pokemon but it was glorious

I have never played Pokemon in my life. Not ever. I once tried to watch the tv show but promptly decided that I preferred Scooby Doo.

However, due to the recent release of Pokemon Go I decided to see what the hype was all about.

This is what I found.

It just looks like so much fun

Initial discoveries

Having a job and trying to catch Pokemon is hard.

Why are their no Pokemon in my office? I have a slightly obsessive character so once I commit to a game like this I am stuck. I must win; my Clash of Clans and Hay Day accounts are pretty sick because of this.

WHY IS THERE NO POKEMON IN MY OFFICE?

I always want to get to the highest level, have the best items and basically be the best at everything ever.

This was not true of Pokemon Go.

The one thing that also drew me into the game was that it is actually probably quite good for me. As a relatively inactive person who spends more time watching Netflix than I do talking to other people. So this could get me out and about and (hopefully) help me shed some of my winter insulation; which in Edinburgh is an essential item in any girls wardrobe.

I became addicted

I found it difficult to find time to do it. Whenever I had the opportunity I forgot to open the app.

However, when I did it was glorious.

I went to the beach with my family and I caught a myriad of Pokemon. It was amazing. I even caught one that was fully evolved – which I think is a big deal. But then again what do I know?

I strolled along the beach phone in hand waiting for the vibrate that meant that there was a Pokemon near me. I think. However this was a slightly dangerous strategy considering that I was walking along some cliffs for half of the outing.

One thing that this did cause was an increase in how anti-social I was being. Whilst my family were chatting and walking I was pacing ahead to try and find the next Pokemon. I even had to walk a bit further than everyone else simply so I could go to a Pokestop.

I was too busy to appreciate the view

It is rather obsessive. I found myself trying to catch Pokemon in the car and constantly asking my dad to drive slower so that I could catch more. I became rather too angry when I lost signal after attempting to catch one and when I did – it didn’t save to my Pokedeck.

After this incident I vowed never to play again. Claiming that I was ‘over it’.

This sassy little guy nearly got away from me

3 minutes later I was back online desperately trying to find the next Pokemon.

Final thoughts

This is an excellent game. Especially useful to keep your younger siblings/family members occupied when you are otherwise engaged. It keeps you active-ish and it is actually quite good fun. I have no idea what Pokemon is or how it works; but I am starting to understand the hype.

For a free app I would say that it is 100% worth it.
