Downing alumnus Michael Winner has died aged 77.

Winner studied Law and Economics at Downing

The veteran film-maker and food critic had been suffering from liver disease, and last summer was given 18 months to live.

Born in 1935, he studied law and economics at Downing.

He made his name directing films, including violent flick Death Wish.

But he is better known to younger generations for his catchphrase “Calm down dear it’s only a commercial” which he recited on adverts for insurer ESure.

His wife paid tribute to her husband, saying: “Michael was a wonderful man, brilliant, funny and generous.

“A light has gone out in my life.”
