Vickerman Divides His Loyalties

Blues captain Dan Vickerman has pledged his loyalty to the Blues despite signing for Northampton.

Blues captain, Dan Vickerman has pledged his loyalty  to the Blues despite signing for Northhampton Saints.

But with THREE major commitments on his hands some have suggested that leading the Blues will take a back seat to his studies and passion for professional rugby.

Vickerman admits that “you always miss playing rugby at the highest level.”  The Saints, who recently qualified for the European Cup, can certainly satisfy this desire.

The problem is that Vickerman’s pledges of loyalty to the Blues have been matched by similar statements of commitment to Northampton. Last week the second-row forward was quoted as saying “it will be a priority to do well for Northampton.”

Yet Vickerman has confusingly also stated “studies are still the priority.”

Vickerman is obviously here to work. Referring to his Saints commitment he stated that “if the work has been done, there is the opportunity to play some good rugby.”

No books are going to be opened during the holidays. Term time will first and foremost be dedicated to work which he describes as “damn hard”.

Whether this will leave enough time for the sort of commitment and dedication needed to return the Blues to winning ways remains to be seen.

Cambridge have dominated the Varsity Match since 1991. With 11 victories to Oxford’s six, expectations are high. And the Blues are desperate to overturn last year’s narrow defeat and find their winning from.
