Over 30 Bristol students sang ‘Africa’ by Toto in Royal Fort Gardens today

‘I bless the rains down in Africa’

Believe it or not, over 30 students braved the chilly weather to sing "Africa" by Toto today in the middle of Royal Fort Gardens.

Following a viral Facebook event– in which 434 people said they were going and 1,700 said they were 'interested'- a motley crew rocked up at 3pm today to sing one of the greatest tunes of all time.

After an uncertain start- with attendees shuffling up to one another to murmur "so, you er here for Toto?"- First year Archaeology and Anthropology student Morgan Black took control to enthusiastically conduct the crowd.

In temperatures of 11 degrees Celsius and lacking any speakers, the crowd mumbled their way across the introduction, using their phones for the lyrics, before roaring lustily into life on the chorus lines.

The Facebook event was organised by two Bristol Facebook pages

One attendee even whipped out a flute for a solo, whilst Black explained afterwards he would have brought a guitar but feared the detrimental effect that rain would have on it.

All in all, it proved to be a memorable if short lived experience. Thanks to the two Facebook pages- 'Good Quality Smooth Parabola' and 'Wills Meme-orial Building'- for hosting it.
