This man claims he got the last piece of pizza from The Grecian before it burnt down

He tried to auction it off

On Sunday night Bristol was rocked by the news that The Grecian- one of the city's most beloved take out institutions- had been the victim of a devastating fire that had gutted the restaurant premises.

Students mourned the loss of this pizza and kebab behemoth, which had dispensed food to generations of UoB students since first opening in 1970.

It is believed that local resident Ben Oakland was the final person to enjoy a slice of heaven from this local icon. Oakland was walking home, clutching his precious load, as the fire began to engulf The Grecian.

According to The Bristol Post, he learnt of the news of a blaze from a friend upon his return: "When I sat down to eat it, my mate told me ‘The Grecian’s on fire’. Obviously I thought he just meant the pizzas were fire, so I just said ‘yeah’, and carried on eating".

Distraught, Oakland felt the loss of this community cornerstone deeply. Immediately he took to the Clifton and Stoke Bishop tickets group on Facebook to give away the final piece of his evening meal.

Speaking afterwards to The Tab Bristol, Oakland told this news outlet what the Gloucester Road mainstay had meant to him: "The Grecian was like a second home to me, somewhere I felt safe. As Foreigner said 'I wanna know what love is' and Grecian showed me".

Fortunately for Ben and other lovers of high quality Greek food, reports suggest that the damage was superficial and that the restaurant aims to be reopening its doors in the near future.
